rating rating cinematronic
The rosy tint to writer/director Cameron Crowe's autobiographical take on the '70s pop-music scene doesn't detract from its accuracy and sparkle. With an Oscar-winning script, letter-perfect cast and cherry-picked period soundtrack, this is simultaneously the finest and the funniest movie ever made about the rock scene. But it's also a painfully honest coming-of-age story based on Crowe's real-life adventures as a 15-year-old writer for Rolling Stone. Young William (Patrick Fugit) hits the road with Stillwater, a band on the rise, to get interviews with guitarist Russell (Billy Crudup) and singer Jeff (Jason Lee) and meet his deadline, but the musicians are wrapped up in the grind of touring and the dream of stardom. Along the way, William falls for adorable groupie Penny Lane (a glowing Kate Hudson, in an Oscar-nominated performance), though she's starry-eyed over Russell. With Frances McDormand as William's anxious mom and Philip Seymour Hoffman as the late gonzo journalist Lester Bangs.
