Along the way, William falls for adorable groupie Penny Lane (a glowing Kate Hudson, in an Oscar-nominated performance), though she's starry-eyed over Russell. With Frances McDormand as William's anxious mom and Philip Seymour Hoffman as the late gonzo journalist Lester Bangs.
