|From humble off-Broadway beginnings, John Cameron Mitchell's new wave musical about a transsexual German rocker became the toast of the New York theater scene. It spawned an original-cast album; now co-author, star, composer and director Mitchell drags his tragicomic alter ego, Hedwig, to the screen. The film adaptation should reap as much praise as the original stage version did. Victim of a botched sex-change operation, East Berlin émigré Hedwig is determined to pursue a career as a rock singer in America. But a former lover plagiarizes Hedwig's act and becomes a star. To get press attention and set the record straight, Hedwig and her band play a series of shows in bars, cafeterias and other unlikely venues on the same dates, in the same cities, as her ex-boyfriend's arena concert tour. The music, a hybrid of glam and punk, is good enough to stand on its own. The supporting players, including SCTV's Andrea Martin, take care of business. And Mitchell is the indomitable diva Hedwig.|
