An outsider (Paul Walker) joins a Los Angeles street-racing gang that may or may not be behind a series of daring highway robberies — as in hijacking trucks at high speed. Soon, he's got the hots for the decent, upstanding sister (Jordana Brewster) of the gang's imperious leader, well played by the ripped, lordly Vin Diesel ("Pitch Black"). As helter-skelter action-adventure, it ain't a total wash. But forget about any pretense of investigating or mythologizing the daredevils who ride in illegal street races for power, money and bragging rights. The script is a hacked-together affair teeming with all sorts of gratuitous, melodramatic bull, and there are a number of continuity problems suggesting that important expository scenes were left on the cutting-room floor. (The motivations behind a violent rivalry with an Asian-American crew are unclear.) Still, there's no denying the visceral blast you get from the well-shot racing sequences. And Diesel has enough personality to make up for a multitude of plot contrivances.
