Robin Williams gives one of the finest performances of his career in the efficient, quietly disturbing psychological drama "One Hour Photo." Following a murderous kiddie-show host in "Death to Smoochy" and a disingenuous novelist in "Insomnia," obsessive chain-store photo-department employee Sy Parrish is Williams' third dark character role in a row. The actor, so revered as a comedian, abandons his manic funnyman persona and completely disappears into Sy — the sort of fade-into-the-background, middle-aged fellow who is taken for granted by most people and for whom the description "life of quiet desperation" was invented. Dedicated and diligent on the job, he's otherwise unremarkable. He lives alone and lives vicariously through the snapshots of his customers, particularly the Yorkins: a successful Dad (Michael Vartan), beautiful Mom (Connie Nielsen) and adorable son who are the picture of a perfect suburban family. But, for Sy, it's a short distance from friendly clerk to stalker.
