At this juncture in a very uneven film career, comic Eddie Murphy has headlined three terrible, low-brow box-office bombs in a row: "Showtime," "The Adventures of Pluto Nash" and "I Spy." Something had to give. Despite a reliance on vulgar, adult-oriented humor in his stand-up comedy routines, Murphy had recent screen success with family-oriented fare such as "The Nutty Professor," "Dr. Dolittle" and "Shrek." So, when he needed a project to elevate his ticket receipts, he chose to do "Daddy Day Care," a lightweight domestic comedy that parents can take their children to see without the elders shuddering, snoozing or frowning too much. Murphy plays the macho father in a suburban household. Losing his job, he's forced to accept the position of house-husband, while his wife is the breadwinner. But an idea strikes him: Since he and an unemployed pal (Jeff Garlin) are stuck watching their kids, they'll start their own day-care center. Their lack of experience in the field is milked — and it's "formula," baby. Pee-pee and ca-ca jokes are dumped where you'd expect them. Snickers happen, and someone learns to be a better dad. With Steve Zahn, Regina King and Anjelica Huston.
