Tim Burton — the quirky, fabulist director responsible for the eye-popping films "Batman," "Edward Scissorhands" and "Beetlejuice" — takes on a story that's well served by his freewheeling visual sense and reflects his surrealistic, myth-making bent. Inspired by Daniel Wallace's novel, "Big Fish" suffers at times from forced whimsy and a rambling, episodic disposition, but Burton is so at home with make-believe and tall tales, and so attuned to the mechanics of wonder, that he regularly fosters awe. It's easy to forgive his excesses. The central figure in "Big Fish" is Edward Bloom, played with self-absorption and grandiosity by Albert Finney. Bloom's lifelong propensity for storytelling may or may not be enhancing the truth of his experiences. As he falls seriously ill, his wife Sandra (Jessica Lange) convinces their estranged son Will (Billy Crudup) to come home and make peace with the old man. Will decides that it's time to get to the bottom of his father's heavily embroidered yarns. The result is a series of flashbacks that astound and rouse. Ewan McGregor engages our affection as the youthful Bloom, discovering a small-town paradise, working as a circus roustabout for an enigmatic ringmaster (Danny DeVito) and courting young Sandra (Alison Lohman). With Helena Bonham Carter and Steve Buscemi.
