To reflect changing times and a new geopolitical reality, the second movie based on author Richard Condon's Cold War psychological thriller "The Manchurian Candidate" dispenses with the fount of evil that lurked behind the brainwashing plot in the first screen treatment. The 2004 film, directed by Jonathan Demme, has certain soldiers who fought in the Gulf War manipulated by a multinational corporation in an insidious plot against America, whereas, in the 1962 version, Korean War vets were captured and controlled by Chinese Communists. Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep and Liev Schreiber deliver unimpeachable performances in the remake; Jon Voight heads a strong supporting cast. As for the story, Maj. Ben Marco (Washington) and his squadron were ambushed during Desert Storm. All of the survivors recall being rescued by Sgt. Raymond Shaw (Schreiber). Years pass, and Shaw is a nominee for vice president — a situation engineered by his domineering mother, Sen. Eleanor Shaw (Streep). But Marco, haunted by nightmares suggesting that the ambush was not as he remembers it, fears there is something terribly wrong with ex-Sgt. Shaw. Distracting plot glitches aside, the action is bracing, and the political subtext is provocative. Demme gets better results here than he did with "The Trouble With Charlie," a clumsy update of another memorable '60s film "Charade."
