Typical. A sweet, quirky Japanese film from 1997 earns rave reviews and a cult following, so someone in Hollywood decides that an American remake is essential. They sign Richard Gere, Jennifer Lopez and Susan Sarandon to major roles, and proceed to bowdlerize some of what was fresh about "Shall We Dance?" to make a version more palatable to U.S. audiences. Gere is the center of the remake as John, a Chicago man whose job consists of helping people prepare their wills. He has a comfy home life, he loves his wife (Sarandon) and children, but he feels something is missing. One evening while heading home on the train, John spots a lovely woman (Lopez) staring enigmatically out of a dance-studio window. He sees her there, night after night, until he's compelled to get off the train and go to the studio. He learns that she's an instructor there, and he signs up for ballroom lessons. Does he want to cheat on his wife? Would the teacher consider an affair? These questions are in the air, but John, a klutz, falls in love with dancing and decides to train for a competition while keeping his new obsession from family and friends. Gere is light on his feet and a bit of a void; Lopez is foxy and graceful; Sarandon is self-possessed until her character frets about her marriage; Stanley Tucci is broad comic relief as John's co-worker. But the forced dramatic crescendos added to this re-do were unnecessary. | |||
