Four generations of the same family — son, father, grandfather and great-grandfather — reluctantly come together when the patriarch is in failing health. "Around the Bend" enflames their contentious relationships on an unexpected treasure hunt. As standard in theme and execution as this kind of interpersonal tragicomedy can be, there was the possibility of greatness in the casting: The superlative Michael Caine as irascible great-grandfather Henry Lair; the inevitably off-the-wall Christopher Walken as wayward grandpa Turner Lair; down-home Josh Lucas as worrywart dad Jason Lair; and appealing youngster Jonah Bobo as elementary-school age son Zach Lair. The three eldest members of the clan became parents early in life, so there's a lot of arrested development to be overcome when Henry sends the others on a clue-driven quest into the Southwest. Written and directed by Jordan Roberts, the movie feels like a series of tropes rather than an organic, original creation. The Lairs flirt with disaster and ruffle local feathers during their expedition. You half expect them to run into Thelma and Louise along the way. Of course, Thelma and Louise would kick their butts. Taken as a platform for Walken's larger-than-life madness, "Around the Bend" has value. Just not a lot, especially since part of the plot hinges, annoyingly, on a major fast-food product placement. With Glenne Headly in a silly supporting role.
