When a ballooning accident in the British countryside brings a handful of concerned people together, one of the parties becomes dangerously fixated on another and starts intruding into the latter person's life. An extremely disturbed and disturbing performance by the lanky Welsh actor Rhys Ifans ("Vanity Fair") anchors "Enduring Love," a creepy stalker movie with more psychological depth than the usual slasher flick. Joe (Daniel Craig), a science professor, is on a picnic with his girlfriend Claire (Samantha Morton of "In America" and "Minority Report"). The balloon incident occurs nearby, and Jed (Ifans) comes onto the scene. At the time, there's only minor contact between Joe and Jed. That doesn't stop Christian-platitude-spouting hippie-type Jed from perceiving a deeper connection and, later on, seeking out Joe in town. An artist growing weary of Joe's undemonstrative nature, Claire doesn't believe that Jed is a threat, but Joe knows something is wrong. He can't escape Jed's constant attention. A sickening vibe starts to pervade the movie. Roger Michell directed "Enduring Love," based on Ian McEwan's bestseller, and also helmed the Julia Roberts-Hugh Grant hit "Notting Hill," which gave Ifans his first major film role as Grant's nutty roommate. The character of Jed is an entirely different, sinister brand of nut that Ifans has no trouble evoking. With Bill Nighy and Susan Lynch as Joe and Claire's best friends.
