There's a certain dread and allure to watching three bona fide Oscar-winning movie superstars debase themselves by strutting and fretting through a bonehead, lowbrow slapstick comedy like a trio of performing monkeys. And that's the only draw to "Meet the Fockers," a cringe-worthy sequel to the much funnier Ben Stiller-Robert De Niro hit, "Meet the Parents." When we last left male nurse Gaylord "Greg" Focker (Stiller), he was desperately and futilely trying to impress ex-CIA operative Jack Byrnes (De Niro), the persnickety, control-freak father of his fiancée Pam (Teri Polo). By the sequel, Greg has finally wormed his way into wary Jack's "circle of trust," but now, it's time for Pam's parents to meet the Fockers: Greg's affectionate, overly demonstrative father Bernie (Hoffman) and blunt, cheery sex-therapist mother Roz (Streisand). Tight-ass Jack isn't impressed. The script smacks of desperation. Its level of humor peaks with gags about oldsters-in-heat, a doggie trapped in a port-a-potty and a couple of characters getting shot with Tasers, and its absurdity becomes tedious. Even the sight of La Streisand on top of De Niro to administer a therapeutic massage, only to end up humping him, isn't enough to rouse a chuckle. Returning for the sequel are Blythe Danner as Jack's mortified wife; Owen Wilson in a forgettable cameo as Pam's ex-boyfriend; and director Jay Roach. All should be embarrassed.
