The hitch with "Hitch" is in the details. Leading man Will Smith has star quality to burn, but his surplus of charm is not enough to carry a film. He still needs a well-written script, a component that the romantic comedy (or comic romance) "Hitch" is missing. Smith plays Alex "Hitch" Hitchens, a love doctor of sorts; he's a self-proclaimed expert on dating, and believes that he can help any man, no matter how dumpy or clumsy, to win the affections of any woman, no matter how goddess-like and unapproachable she seems. But can Hitch help himself when he becomes entranced by feisty gossip columnist Sara, played by Eva Mendes with required self-assurance and sex appeal? It'll be a struggle, since Hitch works anonymously and on referral, and Sara is determined to learn his identity and blow his cover in the pages of the tabloid that employs her. The supporting cast isn't bad: Portly, hyper Kevin James, obnoxious as star of the TV sitcom "King of Queens," comes off as sympathetic in the role of Hitch's "biggest" challenge: Albert, a sad-sack ad exec enamored of slinky heiress Allegra (model Amber Valetta). Oddly enough, the chemistry between Albert and Allegra is more palpable than that which supposedly sparks between Hitch and Sara. A better director than average Andy Tennant ("Sweet Home Alabama") would've helped. With Adam Arkin as Sara's boss and Michael Rapaport as Hitch's best bud.
